Biography:
Born in 1980 in Ehime, Japan. Based in London from 2007 to 2012, and in New York from 2013 to 2020. Returned to Japan in August 2020 and is currently based in Tokyo.

After building approximately ten years of experience as a professional hairdresser in Japan, Kono developed a strong interest in traditional Japanese techniques and studied nihongami (traditional Japanese hairdressing) under the Tōkakai group. In 2007, he moved to London, where he began working as a session hairstylist.

As he continued to pursue his own aesthetic, he started creating wigs and headpieces based on conceptual frameworks for each project. This led him to establish his unique title as a “Hair and Head Prop Artist,” expanding his practice into the field of fashion.

In 2010, he presented a collection under the name TOMIHIRO KONO at London Fashion Week, incorporating video and performance. He personally handled street casting for the models and oversaw the entire creative direction, including staging, structure, and lighting.

After relocating to New York in 2013, Kono served for three years as the hair and head prop director for JUNYA WATANABE COMME des GARÇONS Paris Fashion Week shows. He created highly conceptual head prop works for a total of nine shows across both womenswear and menswear collections.

The design concepts and production processes from this period were compiled into the self-published book HEAD PROP studies 2013–2016. At the same time, he established konomad as a new creative platform, along with the publishing imprint konomad editions.

Around 2016, Kono began focusing intensively on wig making, seeking to further expand the expressive possibilities of hair as a medium. In 2019, he created bespoke wigs for artists including Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, HYUKOH, and Fujiko Hemming.

In 2020, he published his second book, PERSONAS 111 – The Art of Wig Making 2017–2020, through konomad editions. The publication gained international recognition for capturing the transformative power of wigs—allowing instant, repeated metamorphosis impossible with natural hair. By presenting 111 personas through a single, androgynous model, the project spoke to a broader cultural shift toward gender-fluid identity and universal self-transformation.

In September 2020, Kono was selected as one of five artists by Maison Martin Margiela and presented an original wig that reinterpreted the key code “GENDERLESS” for the Artisanal Collection.

Since 2020, his clients have included emerging brands highlighted at Gucci Fest, such as Collina Strada and Yueqi Qi, as well as BAPE and Kiko Kostadinov. He has also produced and sold limited-edition wigs through a triple collaboration with Supreme / Maison Margiela.

His artist collaborations include HYUKOH, NewJeans, and XG, as well as bespoke wigs for Björk, created for the album cover of Fossora, related music videos, and her Japan tours Cornucopia and Orchestral.

Alongside his work for international magazines, advertising, and campaigns, Kono serves as the director of konomad, where he oversees the launch of konomad journal, exhibitions, and broader creative projects as a comprehensive creative director. Books available > shop
